Slough Writers - My Presentation - 'Writing for Magazines' (non-fiction)

This evening, I presented to Sloughwriters, my writers' group a talk entitled 'Writing for Magazines' (non-fiction). I have to admit to having been somewhat nervous talking to a group of various writers. It was attended by around 17 members. The gist of what I spoke about is given in this handout.

I'd planned the talk to take around one hour which it did, almost to the minute and I think it went reasonably well.

My ambition is to make myself available to other groups, clubs, and organisations based in Berkshire and surrounding counties. If you wish to book me, please click here for further information.

The Young Ones!

They start young reading my blog, and this is what they think of it!

Books, books and more books!

I've had a busy morning.

I've been sorting out my bookshelves. I have so many books, they were two deep in some places. I've sorted them by genre. I have a big selection of reference books, some books about writing, and a few fiction.

I've also managed to get the webmaster of SpeakerNet to add 'Berkshire' to the list of areas speakers can give talks.

Search & Rescue Dogs

Today, I've begun researching material for a feature article on Search & Rescue Dogs for 'Dogs Today' magazine.

"SARDA (Search And Rescue Dog Association) dogs are air-scenting dogs that use their sense of smell to find people. They are trained to find people in all types of terrain, including urban, rural, and mountainous areas. SARDA dogs are non-discriminatory and don't need any information about the missing person to start searching. "SARDA dogs are part of a team that includes handlers, bodies, and trainees. Bodies are volunteers who help with the search by acting as missing people for the dogs. Trainees are dogs that are still being trained."...

I've sent email enquiry letters to around ten 'Rescue' organisations and already a couple have responded.

This afternoon I rewrote, edited, and uploaded the HTML file for my 'LATEST WORK' page on my website I've changed the size of the font and re-ordered the list so that the entries are in reverse order (more recent at the top).

Losing a Dog

Above: Hyde Park Secret Pet Cemetery

Today, I've completed and submitted my article 'Losing a Dog' to 'Dogs Today' magazine.

'I lost my loving lively Jack Russell Terrier, Lottie, not long ago. I was devastated, and to some extent, I still am. However, I wondered how others deal with the loss of such a companion. I decided to research the emotional and practical sides of losing a dog. Here, I write about my findings, in the hope that they will help you deal with your sorrow.'...

Keep an eye out for it!

Thursday, 26 September 2024

This week, I've written two new articles for 'Dogs Today' magazine: 'Up, Pup and Away!' and 'Planes for Pampered Pooches', both dealing with flying with your dog. I'm currently writing an article: 'Losing your Dog', again for 'Dogs Today'. I've pitched an idea to 'Able' magazine about 'Braywick Plant Nurseries' which employs and empowers adults with learning difficulties and various complex mental health conditions. I've also submitted my article: 'Does your dog make you happy' to 'Happiful' magazine.

Appeal for Information - Companion Dog Shows

Organising a Companion Dog Show 2025

I'm currently researching material for a feature article on 'Organising a Companion Dog Show' for 'Dogs Today' magazine.
I'd like to tag on to any group who are about to start organising a 2025 Companion And Fun Dog Shows South East in the near future. I'd like to follow your team over the next few months as you plan and organise all aspects of your event right up to, and beyond the show itself. I'm planning to have it published this time next year (2025) in time for new groups to start organising their own Companion and Fun Dog Show in 2026.
Depending on your location, I would like to observe and collect information including photographs of your meetings, either in-person or via the Internet.
If you are interested in assisting me, please get in touch with me via email at sloughwriter@gmail.com or you can call me on 01753 357 090 or 0777 466 4656.
Many thanks for reading this far. I look forward to hearing from you.

Appeal for Information - Dogs in Flight

I'm currently researching material for an article on flying with your dog(s) for 'Dogs Today' magazine. Most dogs don't travel in comfort in the cabin of the plane such as this pampered pooch. Most travel in crates in a specially air-conditioned space within the plane's cargo hold. Usually, dogs travel quite well like this but occasionally disaster strikes. The odd dog becomes ill and in some cases even dies.

Do you have a bad or sad experience that you'd be prepared to share with me? If so, please send me an email at sloughwriter@gmail.com . I'd love to hear from you. Thanks, Richard

I've completed and submitted this article now. Many thanks for your help.

Spring Clean (Virtual)

00:14 Wednesday. Just winding down from tidying up the icons, files, etc. on the desktops of my laptop and PC. I'm zombiefied! Time to get some sleep!

SloughWriters

Last night I attended my SloughWriters group, which meets at Burnham Working Mens Club every Monday night during term time. Last night was a 'Manuscript Evening' where some members read a portion of their work to the group. I read out my short piece (300 word) called 'The Brocas'.

From their website: "Slough Writers is a friendly and supportive group for writers of all abilities, living in the Slough area."

I've been attending SloughWriters for a couple of years and find it both interesting and informative. Next Monday night, I shall be giving a presentation and workshop on 'Writing for Magazines' (non-fiction). This is the second evening I've hosted, the first being over a year ago when I ran a workshop on freewriting (which wasn't very good). This time, I've done much more preparatory work, so I hope it will be much improved.

SPEAKERNET

I'm hoping to be able to give a similar presentation to other clubs/societies/groups etc. in the area. As a result, I've registered with SpeakerNet, my individual details appearing here: https://speakernet.co.uk/talk/6457/writing-for-magazines-nonfiction . If you are, or someone you know is, interested in 'booking' me, please log into the link above. You can also go to SpeakerNet to search for other speakers on a whole range of interesting topics

'Let Sleeping Dogs Lie'

Yesterday, I finished, edited and submitted 'Sniff This Out!' to 'Dogs Today' magazine. It's an article about a dog's incredible sense of smell and how they can detect certain medical conditions and events.

Today, I've been writing 'Let Sleeping Dogs Lie', an 800-word feature article about the things that dogs experience when asleep.

Later today, when I've had a break, I'm going to start on 'Up, Pup and Away' about flying with your dog.

I'm on a roll this weekend!

It's later (16:15) and I've just had a sandwich and cup of tea. I then re-organised the folders and documents in my 'PROJECTS' file.

I need some more contributions from people who've flown with their dogs before I start any writing. So I think that's all for today. I'm going to watch TV for the rest of the day (or maybe read a book on nonfiction writing!).

Looking to give a dog a fantastic forever home.

Since we lost our beloved Lottie a couple of weeks ago we have discussed and decided to give another rescue dog a home. In the first instance, we will be dealing with the Pine Ridge Dog Sanctuary in Ascot as they arranged for us to adopt Lottie.

Writing a pitch for magazines.

How to Craft a Winning Pitch for a Magazine: Ultimate Guide

by William Opar

"Creating a captivating pitch for a magazine is an art form  requires a combination of research, creativity, and persistence. In this ultimate guide, we will cover everything you need to know about crafting a winning pitch for a magazine, from understanding your target audience to following up with editors. So, let's dive in and learn the secrets to successful magazine pitching.

What is a Pitch?

The first step in crafting a winning pitch is to understand what a pitch is. A pitch is a brief summary of your story idea that you send to the magazine's editor with the goal of convincing them to publish your work.

Before you start dancing your fingers on the keyboard, it's important to keep in mind that editors receive dozens, if not hundreds, of pitches every day. So, for your pitch to be accepted, it must stand out from the rest."

5 minutes to midnight on Friday 13th!

I've been working on my 'Writing for Magazines (nonfiction)' presentation throughout the evening. It's still Friday the 13th but nothing happened yet!

While working I've been listening to Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells 50th Anniversary Tour. I'm going to see it in the Hexagon Theatre in Reading on Sunday October 6th. Can't wait!

See the Berlin show by clicking here (Link opens in a new window).

Friday 13th!

It's Friday folks! But it's Friday 13th! So far, so good! I haven't done much so far today, yet. I planned to make out the 'cue cards' for when I give talks (especially when I give my 'Writing for Magazines' talk to the 'Slough Writers Group' in a couple of weeks) but haven't got round to it yet. Last night (or rather the early hours of this morning),

Also this morning, I registered with 'SpeakerNet' hoping to get some bookings to give talks to groups/clubs/organizations etc.

This afternoon, we watched the 'Chelsea Detective' on catchup television. I thought that the first two episodes were brilliant.

Over the last couple of days, I received 'testimonials' to add to my website:

"Richard was one of my most dedicated and enthusiastic creative writing students, with a varied and fascinating supply of stories to tell."
Edward Parnell. Tutor, National Centre for Writing (Creative Non-fiction)

"We love including Richard's diverse features. He always takes such tremendous care and is a pleasure to deal with."
Beverley Cuddy. Editor, Dogs Today Magazine

I'm so pleased with these and wish to thank the authors.

Now it's back to designing and writing these 'cue cards'. Watch this space...

Thursday Talk

I'm feeling a little better today and even got some writing done.

I'd like to hear from anyone who has any ideas that they think I should tackle. If you have, or anyone you know has, please drop me a line at sloughwriter@gmail.com. I look forward to hear from you.

Evening: Designed an anonymous evaluation form to be filled out by participants at the end of my presentation/talk/workshop.

I hope to give talks/presentations/workshops to clubs/groups/societies around the West London, Berkshire area and tonight registered my details with SpeakerNet.

Weepy Wednesday.

Not very happy this morning. Yesterday afternoon, I had to have my lovely dog Lottie put to sleep. Fortunately, it was very peaceful. May she rest in peace.

Tuesday

It's 03:10 and I can't sleep, hence posting this at such a ridiculous hour. I've been 'googling' for information about what was the Cadbury chocolate crumb processing alongside the Shropshire Union Canal at Knighton.

Recycling!

Today I've been researching facts and images for an article that I intend to submit to 'Waterways World' magazine. I wrote such an article for 'Canal and Riverboat' magazine in 1996. But this article will include more facts and figures that I've come across nowadays. 'Canal and Riverboat' magazine is no longer in print, hence my submission to 'Waterways World' magazine. My original article can be viewed here: http://richardhill.co.uk/shroppie.pdf.

Or Pets even!

I found this US magazine and have submitted 'Does your dog make you happy?' to them this afternoon.

Not only dog magazines!

I've decided to spread out! I've written a lot about dogs, but no other pets. So, it's time to do something about that. I've recently had an article in Dogs Today magazine about 'Does your dog make you happy?' Well, I've realized that this article can act as a template for an article 'Does your pet make you happy?' All it needs is some more research into what the 'experts' and pet owners have to say. Below is my 'pitch' to the editor of Pet magazine...

Breathe again!

I finished and submitted my article on the 'Cinnamon Trust' today. I also began to research material for my article about 'Dogs in Flight'.

This evening I edited and submitted my article 'Does your dog make you happy?' to Breathe magazine.

Dogs in Flight

Hi folks,

I'm now researching material for an article on dogs being carried in aeroplanes. There are some real horror stories out there. If you have any bad or sad stories to tell, please email me at sloughwriter@gmail.com Thanks.

Sunday, 1 September 2024

Early Monday Morning.

It's 04.49 and time to get some writing done. But there's a snag. In order to write my feature on 'The Cinnamon Trust', I have to wait for some of the volunteers to email me. I have a full interview transcribed from the PR officer of CT. More on that later.

I'm sneaking around the net for some inspiration. More later...

BTW: Ignore the time on the postings on this blog software. It's US time.

Sunday

The week's gone so quickly! I've produced 'mini' websites and uploaded them. I may have already posted these links before, but here they are in case I haven't:
I'm trying to prepare carefully to make my 'Writing for Magazines' workshop for Slough Writers group as entertaining and educational as possible.
Wish me luck!
