Wednesday

It's been a funny week so far. It's been a mixture of studying, reading and writing. There's not much to report except to share one of my writings that I've submitted to an anthology of work by members of the 'Gay Authors Workshop'...

The Two Brewers

Richard Hill

I don’t remember the weather. I was walking down Clapham High Street, a route that I walked most evenings from my home and workplace, South Western Hospital. It was quite late, around 10pm. My destination was, the Two Brewers, a gay pub that had been open for a year or so.

Once inside, I entered the ‘dance bar’, as opposed to the ‘drag bar’. It was quite quiet, but for the Two Brewers, this was the norm at this time of the night. Evelyn Thomas's "High Energy" was being played at a zillion decibels.

I went to the bar. “What are you having love.” shouted the muscular bearded barman, in full drag. "the usual?” I nodded. Drag queens tended to (and sometimes still do) make me cringe. I waited as he poured me a lager from one of the pumps. “60 pence please love.”, he shouted as he handed me my pint. I paid and went and stood at the corner of the bar as the room slowly began to fill.

Much later, by now, the room was busy, heaving with men. Some cruised other men while others danced. I wasn’t there to cruise, preferring instead just to take in the ‘scenery’. By now, I was on my third or fourth pint.

In front of me, leaning with his back against a mirrored pillar, was a young man who flashed the occasional glance in my direction. I smiled, and he smiled back. He was a goodlooking ‘straight’ looking guy with engaging facial features. He was dressed in a Levi style jacket and jeans which contributed to his heterosexual appearance. I was being cruised. Should I reciprocate?

To cut a ‘long story short’, forty years on, in July this year, we celebrated our forty years together.

Sunday

Not feeling too well today. Stayed in bed mostly.

Finished reading 'The Art of Creative Nonfiction.' by Lee Gutkind. It's a book that's both interesting and informative. I'd recommend it to anyone who is interested in writing in this genre.

Saturday

Today has been a 'study' day. I've studied some of my online course 'Creative Writing non-fiction'. This afternoon, I've been reading 'The Art of Creative Nonfiction' by Lee Gutkind. I find this book most informative and interesting. It's written in a way that anyone (including myself) can read and understand.

This evening, the t-shirt (above) I'd ordered arrived from Amazon. I'm getting quite a collection of 'Writer/Writing' themed t-shirts and hoodies!

Friday

Not much happening today. However, I've changed my mind on how I'm going to use the domain name www.dannydog.co.uk. I've decided to make it a 'portal' to my personal website at www.richardhill.co.uk. I think that it's a unique domain name. (Besides, I have a bomber jacket with www.dannydog.co.uk embroidered on the back!).

Thursday

I've had a frustrating day today. I'm setting up my 'Dannydog Productions' website. I used to use it when I had a 'media' organization, but when I  couldn't make it work, I abandoned it and the website www.dannydog.co.uk . However, I've decided to make it a place for 'links' to other 'writing' websites and resources. This is purely a 'hobby' project. I wanted to use the same 'homepage' that I'd previously used, but I'd lost all the files.

I remembered an online service called the 'Wayback Machine' at https://web.archive.org/. (The Wayback Machine is an initiative of the Internet Archive, a non-profit, building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts .). I used this service to look for it - and I found it listed from many years ago. I saved all the files, images, and HTML, and got it working on my pc. But it had a lot of additional HTML coding that I didn't need.

However, when I removed the unwanted HTML coding and tried to open it in a file I created on my desktop, I couldn't get it to work. But it worked in the 'downloaded' file. To cut a long story short, I spent hours trying to get this to work, I managed to get it working, and www.dannydog.co.uk now 'sits' on www.richardhill.co.uk/ddog .

My next 'project' will be to create a website for this domain name. Watch this space.

Yesterday, I did some work on my final assignment. I wrote around 800 words toward the 1,500-word count. I shall do what I usually do when I'm writing articles and that is to write 30-50% more than the required word count. I then leave it alone for a few days and come back to it with fresh eyes. I then edit out the 'extra' number of words which I believe makes for a more powerful and punchy piece.

Today, I did almost nothing (apart from ordering the above hoodie! - apt, or what?!)

Tuesday

Not much happening today. Hardly slept last night due to pain in my legs. Couldn't really concentrate on anything today and kept taking 'mini-naps'!

I spent part of the day collating and collecting all my personal details in one place e.g. NHS & NI numbers etc.

Slowly reading 'The Therapeutic Potential of Creative Writing' by Gillie Bolton. It's slow going, but I'll get there!

Sunny Monday

It's a bright sunny studying Monday and I'm stuck in front of a book and my laptop. Ironically, it's too bright to use the laptop outdoors. In addition to this, I don't have a chair in which to sit outdoors. We do have a folding chair, but it's rather wonky. I'd manage to sit in it okay, but I'd never get up out of it again.

A week or two ago, I accidentally deleted two sections from my website; the 'OTHER STUFF' and 'LINKS' pages. I've been able to update the first, but am still working on the latter. I hope to upload the 'LINKS' page later today, or tomorrow.

This evening, I've re-instated the 'FICTION' and 'POETRY' sections of my website. Check them out at www.richardhill.co.uk .
